In the late 1800s, a man named George Abernathy began his venture selling Singer sewing machines from farm to farm around his hometown of Bear Paw, North Carolina. Soon after in the year 1890, he opened a commissary in a nearby town of Farner, TN seeing the need in the area. Years later, George moved his business to Ducktown, TN and partnered with Mr. Carl Center forming Abernathy and Center Mercantile Business. They sold a variety of merchandise ranging from nails and hardware to furniture and coffins. After George's death Luther Abernathy, his 18 year old son, took over his interest in the business trying to follow in his father's footsteps. As the business continued to thrive, Luther opened a secondary store in, what is known today as, Copperhill, TN. During Luther's time in Copperhill, he created two business slogans: "Coffins, Caskets, and Dynamite" and "You marry the Girl, We'll Furnish the Home". The second slogan, "You marry the Girl, We'll Furnish the Home", is most well known to our community and still stands today at Abernathy's Complete Home Furnishings.
Later in 1925, after years of success and expansion, an arsonist burned his Copperhill facility and the Great Depression soon followed in the 1930s. After the depression, Luther rebuilt on the land where our business currently stands today and his decision was made to continue business only selling furniture and hardware. Luther passed away in 1949 leaving his wife, Elizabeth, and children to run the business. In the 1950s the store was partially torn down in right of way for the new highway and in 1973, after remodeling once again, an arsonist burned the store once again. People in the community helped the Abernathy family stop the fire before destroying their business a second time. The building and records were partially saved due to the faithful neighbors around the community; the building was eventually used as a storage warehouse due to their efforts. After this event Elizabeth decided to retire leaving her son, Carl Edd, the sole proprietor of the business. Later that same year, Carl Edd built a much larger, flame retardant facility in the same location using the old building as a warehouse for inventory.
Today, this facility still stands at our current location between Blue Ridge, Georgia and McCaysville, Georgia. Carl Edd Abernathy eventually retired in 1984 and on July 1, 1984, a local man by the name of Wayne Queen, who was administrating the Handy Korner Convenience Store in Epworth, bought the business. Since that date in 1984, Wayne and his wife, Diane, have made many additions to the store that was previously erected by Mr. Carl Edd Abernathy. After selling the Handy Korner in 1989, he began making additions that include a second floor showroom to the main building, a new three-story warehouse to serve as inventory storage and showroom space, and a two story office area with showroom space connecting the two buildings together. Since 1984, Wayne and Diane have expanded Abernathy's Complete Home Furnishings to over 20,000 square feet of area to accommodate for the rapidly growing area around them. In May 2006, Wayne and Diane turned the business over to their children, Melody, Jason, and Dustin. We currently specialize in retail furniture, home appliances, televisions, and accessories. Our ultimate goal is to treat our customers as if they are part of our own family. SPECIAL ORDERS ARE NOT SUBJECT TO CANCELLATION. Availability of merchandise is estimated according to the manufacturer’s estimated timeframe at the time the order is written. Seller shall not be responsible for delays in delivery of merchandise caused by manufacturer’s scheduling, inventory on hand, availability of materials, transportation difficulty or any other instance beyond the control of the seller. Special order items may take UP TO 12 WEEKS to arrive even though normal lead time is much less. ALL SALES ARE FINAL – NO REFUNDS.
All exchanges and cancellations of in-stock items are subject to seller approval. A minimum fee of 50% (plus a 3% credit card processing fee, if applicable) of the item(s) pre-tax purchase price will be assessed (re-stocking fee) on seller-approved returns, exchanges, refunds or cancellations. Paid delivery fees and sales tax are NON-REFUNDABLE. Merchandise acquires individual manufacturer warranties. Buyer maintains all responsibility for warranty claims and terms. Items sold “As Is” retain NO warranty. BUYER LAYAWAYS ARE NOT SUBJECT TO CANCELLATION and ALL FUNDS PAID ARE FORFEITED. Buyer agrees to complete payment on schedule, or proceeds of prior payment(s) towards layaway may be forfeited. All returned checks are subject to a $35 service charge.
Seller will move existing items within the buyer’s home to allow space for purchased items. Any additional requests (handle reversal, item movement, etc.) MUST BE MADE AT TIME OF PURCHASE and are subject to additional fees. Buyer is liable and agrees to measure passageways/destination to ensure purchased items will fit and that all plumbing/electrical aspects match installation requirements. Seller is not responsible for mishaps in preparation, dis-pleasures of comfort or unmet expectations. A $75 service fee will be applied if seller’s services cannot be completed due to such instances. Seller does NOT install dishwashers, venting appliances, wall ovens, surface units, air conditioners, gas appliances, ice maker water lines or alter any aspect of your home beyond any written description itemized on this order. Delivery personnel reserve the right to determine manageability of instances above.
Buyer assumes ALL risks and ALL liability associated with transit AND installation of picked up merchandise. Damages incurred to the purchased items by the buyer due to installation errors or transit are FULLY liable to the buyer and NO exchange or refund will be given. Seller is not liable for any damages discovered or occurring to the merchandise or personal property after delivery/pick up.
